Treehouse Engineering
OREGON - A building permit was needed for a small but picturesque tree house constructed at a local bed and breakfast establishment. Greenwood Engineering eventually obtained the permit, but only after seven years of research, development, engineering and litigation. Thus began the modern adult tree house movement, and several more permitted tree houses constructed for commercial and private use soon followed.
What began in 1991 as a “labor of love and friendship” has since become a full time business, complete with a national clientele and a highly talented design team. Analysis techniques original developed for space craft design have helped to establish credibility in the eyes of skeptical code officials. The state of the art in tree house engineering analysis and construction is continually being elevated, with current or completed major projects in California, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. More than 800 tons of loads were mounted above ground during 2006. Development and manufacture of specialized hardware that minimizes the impact upon the host trees while simultaneously allowing substantial load transfer into the trees has been equally important to the tree house movement. Specialized hybrid support systems have been created where the trees at the chosen site were inadequate for the job. Continual improvements are being made in performance and cost effectiveness.
Greenwood Engineering now seeks clients who are committed to developing especially artistic and functional tree houses that will engage the full talents of the design team.
